Brandon George just graduated from Dothan High School and says he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps as an audio engineer. While his mind is set on going to college the cost is almost unbearable.

However, thanks to a recent scholarship, a heavy weight may be lifted.

"When I first heard about the scholarship, I knew it could help me through college and tuition and help me go through college. So, I felt more confident about going," said George.

George is among many Houston County and Dothan City High School graduates who have filled out applications for a scholarship given by the Wiregrass Foundation.

The $285,000 scholarship will help 2008 high school graduates attending Wallace Community College.

"They realized students are having a tough time, especially with the economy fluctuating like it is," says Sally Buchannan with Wallace Comm. College.

Houston Co. Schools Superintendent, Tim Pitchford, says, "With the economy the way it is, we've seen I believe in just a week or so that Auburn’s tuition went up 12-14%. So, that's going to be a domino effect across the state in tuition."

While that may hold true, one thing that’s for sure is the reassurance that parents will have knowing their child will have the opportunity to continue their education while not breaking the bank.

"It was just gracious knowing that there are some scholarships out there that can amend the deficiencies that a parent may have when they’re trying, especially a single parent, when you're trying to send your son to college, or a college education; it was a really good feeling," said Merrien Keye, parent.

This scholarship is going to help hundreds of students. Students still have a chance to apply for the scholarship.

The requirements are a 2.5 GPA and the student must have a high school diploma.
