Last month, under the recommendation of Dothan city school board attorney Jere Seagrest, board members decided to wait before making interim superintendent Doctor Sam Nichols position permanent.

The advertisement period ended Friday, and Kelly applied. He's worked in various capacities within the school system for nearly 30 years, and believes he's the right man for the job.

Doctor Kelly says, "I think one of the biggest challenges facing Dothan City Schools is regaining some of the students we lost 4 various reason. I'm thinking that communication with the parents, with the community, with the business community particularly would be one of the keys to fix the problem"

Next month board members will interview the candidates in an open meeting.
