Evolution Debate

A federal judge has banned a Pennsylvania public school district from teaching "intelligent design" in its biology classes.

The ruling says the Dover Area School Board violated the Constitution when it ordered that its biology curriculum must include "intelligent design."

The judge also says that citizens were "poorly served" by those that put it in the curriculum.

Attorneys for the school board have argued that its members sought to improve science education by exposing students to alternatives to Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection. They argue that it can't fully explain the existence of complex life forms.

The judge says he's not saying "intelligent design" shouldn't be studied or discussed, but that it is simply unconstitutional to teach it "as an alternative to evolution in a public school science classroom."
