Mobile County Schools

All of Mobile County's schools will be on probation until 2003.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools placed the schools on probation after investigating the relationship between the superintendent and school board members.

The accrediting agency can't penalize an entire system, so it sanctioned each school.

If the problems cited by the agency are not corrected, the system's 100 schools, which serve 65,000 students, could lose their accreditation. That could make it difficult for graduates to gain admission to colleges or find jobs.

The county schools came under scrutiny in October, Mobile city officials and other concerned business and civic leaders reported that school board members were interfering with Superintendent Harold Dodge's ability to do his job.

The schools were placed on probation Monday.
