Alabama schools rank 10th nationally in 2002 in the number of teachers earning certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

The state Department of Education reports 139 teachers have achieved certification, bringing the state's total number of teachers with the professional recognition to 456.

Certification is a yearlong process of review and assessment. The board examines lesson plans, teaching ability, subject knowledge and student success before making the certifications.

Alabama is one of 47 states that offer financial incentives for teachers to achieve certification. The perks include money for application fees, a $5,000 grant for classroom use and a $5,000 annual raise.

Alabama has more than 47,000 full-time teachers.
