Teacher Warning

Five of the state's 29 universities that offer students teacher training have programs with significant problems, and the state could drop them if they don't improve.

Alabama A&M, Jacksonville State, Miles College, Troy State and West Alabama all had teacher training programs that were given academic "alert" status.

State Board of Education officials announced the alerts in a report released Thursday.

Alabama has 29 universities with a total of 411 teacher preparation programs ranging from math to music, so the seven programs on alert status mark a small percentage of the state's teacher preparation programs.

Programs on academic alert have three years to fix their problems achieving a status known as "clear" or face having their state approval removed.
