Eufaula Elementary School Reconfiguration

Elementary schools in one local area are doing some rearranging with their campuses, hoping to have more of a streamline with each grade level.

Parent Lynn Land says, "I think it's great actually; I think it's really good that the younger children are not with the older children."

Land has a daughter who attends Sanford Avenue Elementary and is pleased to know the school, along with the other two elementary schools will be consolidating to just two.

Eufaula City Schools Spokesperson Mitzi Clayton says, "Our present Bluff City Campus, which now has first through fifth grade will be home to Eufaula City School central office as well as the HOPE Academy."

Clayton says the plan is to consolidate the three schools to two, concentrating more on each grade level and its students.

Western Heights Elementary, which currently carries pre-kindergarten to fifth grades, will soon be housing pre-k to second grade.

Sanford Avenue Elementary, which has first through fifth grade will pick up with the third graders and carry them through fifth.

Mitzi adds, "The benefits really out way the cons because we can do things like build better media centers for a specific age group, not such a large age group. We can have a great center for the early childhood students as well as the elementary students."

Clayton says the rearranging will allow students to specialize in their own age groups and have a place for gifted students and those who may need some extra attention.

Land agrees and says it is a benefit all around. "I think it allows the kids to develop socially and emotionally at their level," she says.

Clayton says one major concern for some was if anyone would be losing their jobs; she says none of the employees have a thing to worry about.

The school hopes to be finished with the project by August 2008.
