Riley Proposes Tripling Size of State Pre-K in First Year

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Governor Bob Riley has proposed tripling the size of Alabama's pre-kindergarten program in the first year of expansion.

And he wants the number of 4-year-olds getting early schooling to go from the current 2,400 to about 21,000 in four years.

Riley told a news conference Thursday that the high quality of the Alabama program has been noted by national experts but it is reaching only four percent of all 4-year-olds in the state.

He said funding would be at $30 million the first year and grow to $81 million in four years.
