Multi-functional touch-screen devices are a highlight at Computex, Asia's largest PC show, which opened in Taipei on Tuesday (June 4).

Touch screen devices dominated the show as major PC makers competed in price and portability as well as system integration functions.

Asustek Computers Inc showcased its Transformer Book Trio, a computer device that combines laptop, desk-top and tablet PCs in one.

The device, capable of switching between Android and Windows 8 systems, will be available to the market later this year, said a Asus product manager.

"The tablet is equipped with the Android system, and the base PC station is equipped with the Windows 8 system. When they are combined together, we can use both systems, and when they are separated, the two systems can work independently as well," said Danny Huang, Asustek Product Manager.

Asustek's Padfone infinity upgraded from it predecessors, Padfone and Padfone 2, by taking away the cumbersome stylus and keyboard, and reducing the product's weight.

World No. 4 PC vendor Acer showcased its 8-inch tablet PC, Iconia W3, at the Computex. The product is expected to be sold at approximately 329 U.S. dollars.

Taiwan's Acer Inc expects up to 80 percent of its products to use touch-screen technology by next year or the year after, hoping new tablets and touch-notebook computers will revive its sales in a PC market where quarterly shipments are at their lowest in nearly four years.

Acer Chairman J.T. Wang has said that touch-screen models are expected to rise to 30-35 percent of total notebook PC sales at the world's No.4 PC vendor by the end of this year, up from 25 percent this quarter.

In smartphones, Acer introduced a 5.7-inch phablet running on Android that allows multitasking.

"For example, if you want to use a calculator and take notes at the same time, you can open both applications the functions can be switched back and forth," said Lara Lin, a product promoter.

Microsoft also features embedded functions in its Windows 8 systems which will allows it to be applied to people's daily lives, such as fitness games and rehabilitation applications.

An update to its personal computer operating system, Window 8.1, is expected to be available soon to existing Windows 8 customers.

Computex features products from 1,724 companies, and its organizer expects the show to attract more than 38,000 visitors from around the world.

The 5-day show closes on Saturday (June 8).
