Almost 3,000 Mexicans peered at the moon through telescopes on Saturday (April 20) and broke the Guinness world record the country set in 2011.
In total, 2,978 people simultaneously looked through telescopes at the moon from Mexico City and 40 other locations across the country.
The previous record for telescopes pointed at the same location at the same time was established in 2011, when 2,753 Mexicans participated in the event.
On their Facebook page, event organizers noted that attendance would have likely been higher if it were not for inclement weather in the state of Puebla, where only 316 people participated.
The event is just one of a series of science-related public events to be held in Mexico which will end with the "Night of the Stars" on November 9, when thousands are expected to gather across Mexico for an evening of telescope viewing, workshops, conferences and musical performances.
