Czech Republic: Communist Tower Hotel Opens for Business

This hotel definitely offers a room with a view. Until recently the old communist TV tower in Prague was just known as the ugliest building of the Czech capital, but now it has a new attraction on offer - a luxurious one-room hotel looking out on the city.

Erected in the mid-eighties with the intention to prevent TV and radio transmissions from the West, the building of the tower coincided with the use of satellite dishes. Therefore rather than fulfilling a purpose, the tower became known for its ugliness, even being named the second ugliest building of the world by an international survey.

To improve the surface a bit, well-known Czech artist David Cerny let his baby sculptures crawl up the tower, attracting more visitors and adding to the growing popularity of the tower.

Now a five-star apartment has been built 70 metres high in the tower, in the place initially used by the technical stuff.

"The apartment is equipped with the highest quality furniture like the comfortable hand made Swedish double bed. In the evening you can overlook Prague just from the basin in the glass bathroom," sales Manager Lucie Cerna explained.

One night in the apartment costs 1000 euros but it includes additional services like a limousine with driver, dinner, breakfast and butler service during the entire stay, as well as the obviously stunning views of Prague.

"We think that the apartment will be mostly used for special occasions like weddings but anyone can spend a night here. I think the clientele will be middle class or well-off," said Cerna.

The one-room hotel was opened in February 2013 and also offers its guests a restaurant, bar and cafe just one floor down from the room. Visitors who can't afford to stay there, are able to enjoy the views from an observation deck.
