“Clean Out Computer,” “Spilled Milk,” “National Peppermint Patty Day”: The Unusual Holidays of February 11th

Three unusual and unofficial holidays occur on the 11th of February, involving a wide variety of things from a plain item of clothing, a staple beverage and organizing electronics.

“Clean Out Your Computer Day” occurs on the second Monday of the month of February. It was first sponsored by the Institute of Business Technology in 2000. Some of the actions recommended for “Clean Out Your Computer Day” include deleting old e-mails, un-installing old programs you don't use, and move files you don't frequently use to external storage such as a blank CD or external hard drive.

“National Peppermint Patty Day” pays tribute to the chocolate candy with creamy peppermint filling. The most popular version of this is the York Peppermint Patty, which was first sold in 1940, although many other brands exist. “Peppermint Patty” is also the name of a well-known “Peanuts” character, who has been around for decades from Charles Schultz's enduring comic strip.

“Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk Day” is a holiday that, perhaps, encourages optimism and positivity! While negative events may occur, the day encourages one to leave the troubles behind, solve the problem, and move forward with an upbeat outlook. The phrase “don't cry over spilled milk” has actually been around for centuries.

None of these holidays are recognized by the U.S. Congress, and are thus considered unofficial.
