CBS Home Entertainment Releases Full Details on Next “Star Trek: The Next Generation” Blu-Rays

Two upcoming Blu-Ray home video releases will continue the release of the enduring “Star Trek” television legacy on high definition, in April.

In a recent press release, CBS Home Entertainment fully detailed the upcoming April 30th Blu-Ray releases for “Star Trek: The Next Generation” season three and a separate release for the fan-favorite two-part episode “The Best of Both Worlds.”

Season 3 of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” includes 26 episodes of the enduring science fiction series that begin in 1987 and starred Patrick Stewart, Levar Burton and Jonathan Frakes. Several fan favorite and critically-acclaimed episodes are on the set such as “The Survivors,” “The Defector,” “Booby Trap,” and “Yesterday's Enterprise.”

As in the previous releases of the series for Blu-Ray, the series has been re-mastered from the original film elements for high definition presentation. This is because the series was originally put together on standard-definition video. Those behind this re-master, however, strive to stay as close to the original presentation as possible, just with much clearer video and sound quality.

There will be many extras on the Season 3 set. These include the original episode commercials narrated by Ernie Anderson, a set of audio commentaries on episodes from cast and crew, and an all-new gag reel. In addition, several new documentary features are on the set, including a writer's roundtable, and a behind-the-scenes look at the production of that season.

Season 3 will be available in the United States on Blu-Ray on April 30th, 2013.

On the same day, a single-disc release will feature “The Best of Both Worlds.” Some “Star Trek” fans count this episode featuring the Borg as one of the franchise's finest moments. Originally a cliffhanger ending resolved at the beginning of the following season, this release edits the two parts together for a single presentation. It will also have exclusive extras not on the Season 3 set, such as a new commentary, separate gag reel, and a documentary focusing on the Borg.

Earlier this year, CBS Home Entertainment also confirmed that a Blu-Ray release of “Star Trek: Enterprise” would be released in 2013.
