Wildcat is the latest version of Boston Dynamics' tethered Cheetah robot which, in 2012, became the fastest legged robot in the world, surpassing 18 mph on a treadmill.
The company says Wildcat was being field-tested without a tether and reached a speed of 16 mph, surpassing previous performances on flat terrain using bounding and galloping gaits. Developers hope the robot will one day be able to run up to 70 mph.
Wildcat is the latest in a celebrated line-up of advanced robots produced by Boston Dynamics. With funding from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the research arm of the U.S. Department of Defense, the company is also developing Big Dog, a futuristic mechanical pack mule and PETMAN, an anthropomorphic robot for testing equipment.
