Washington Monument to Remain Closed At Least 1 Year

Disappointing news for tourists visiting the nation's capital this summer: they still won't be able to go inside the Washington Monument.

The tallest structure in DC has been closed for nearly a year following an earthquake last August.

Engineers found the quake left several cracks in the monument and damaged interior support beams.

National Park Service officials say repairs will begin this fall and may take a year or more to complete.
