The drought in the United States is continuing to intensify, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The latest Drought Monitor says 61 percent of the contiguous United States faces moderate or worse drought conditions this week. And nearly 30 percent is experiencing extreme to exceptional drought. Exceptional is the most severe category.
More than 221 thousand square miles of the United States is already in the exceptional drought category. That's an amount of land larger than the state of California.
