This Day in History - June 19th, 1978 - Garfield Comic Strip Debuts

It's one of the most enduring and popular comic strips of the past few decades, and it's celebrating its anniversary on this day in history.

We're talking about Garfield, which made its debut in newspapers on June 19th, 1978. Created by Jim Davis. The strip follows the food-loving, Monday-hating orange cat Garfield and his bachelor owner Jon Arbuckle.

There are also many popular supporting characters as well like Odie, the yellow dog who's constantly a target for Garfield, and Nermal, the self proclaimed cutest cat.

A popular animated series based on the strip debuted on CBS in 1-88 called Garfield and Friends. This series was extremely popular and a big hit, running several seasons into the mid 90s. There have also been other specials, series, and films made about Garfield.
