The Centers for Disease Control predicts 1 in 3 Americans will have diabetes by the year 2050.
The study attributes the increase to America's obesity problem.
Health officials recommend getting screened if you have high blood pressure and cholesterol, or if there's a family history of diabetes.
“This is not surprising that we are seeing an increase. We see more obesity, people are not as active and jobs are more than they used to be,” said Dr. Linda Gilmore, Diabetes Coordinator with Flowers Hospital.
According to the CDC, diabetes is the second costliest disease at $174 billion annually.
Flowers Hospital will host a Diabetes lunch and learn program on November 10th.
