Study: Child Prescription Drug Poisoning on the Rise

By: CBS
By: CBS

A new study shows the rates of prescription poisonings in children are increasing.

Researchers found a link between a surge in adults taking prescription medications and an increase in kids getting drug poisoning.

Children under age 6 face the greatest risk, followed by teenagers.

Despite safeguards like child-resistant packaging, more than 70,000 children a year are evaluated for accidental drug poisoning.

Poisonings from cholesterol and high blood pressure medicines led to the most ER visits. Poisonings from prescription painkillers and diabetes drugs led to the most serious injuries and hospitalizations.

Doctors say if a child accidentally ingests prescription drugs, consult a medical professional or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
