It may have been his Army training or simple gut reaction ... but whatever guided Sgt. James Bennett, his actions saved two young lives.
Saturday, Bennett was awarded the Soldier's Medal for his heroism on the scene of a car accident earlier this year.
The sergeant was home on leave near Fresno, California when he saw a burning minivan and stopped to help.
The two parents were dead inside the van, but with the help of his own father, Bennett was able to pull a two-year-old boy and one-year-old girl out of the wreckage.
Recipients of the Soldier's Medal have carried out a heroic act outside of combat and put their own life in extreme danger.
The ceremony was held at the El Monte US Army Reserve Center.
