The top guns at Google and Apple could get grilled at a Senate hearing on high-tech policy today.

They're set to testify before a subcommittee just a few weeks after word got out that smartphones and devices for both companies can track where its users are.

The subcommittee will look into whether federal consumer privacy laws are keeping pace as technology advances.

Researchers revealed last month that Apple iPhones and iPad 3Gs apparently collect continuous information about users' locations and store that data in a secret file.

Google admits it collects location data but only from users that give their okays.

The company provides the popular Android operating system for millions of
smartphones.
