School Bus Driver Fired Over Confederate Flag

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon school bus driver fired after he refused to remove a Confederate battle flag flying from his pickup truck has enlisted the help of a conservative civil liberties group in hopes of getting his job back.

The Rutherford Institute of Charlottesville, Va., sent a letter Wednesday to First Student Bus Transportation Services demanding that Ken Webber of Medford, Ore., be reinstated.

The institute says flying the flag is covered by his First Amendment right to free speech.

Webber says he was fired Tuesday for gross insubordination after refusing to remove the flag, which is also emblazoned with the word

At issue is the time he parks the pickup at the bus yard, which is on school property.

First Student spokeswoman Bonnie Bastian did not immediately respond to a telephone call and e-mail for comment.

This is ridiculous. This man should never have been fired. If nothing else, he has the freedom of speech and freedom of expression that are his inalienable rights under our country's constitution.

The racist groups, such as the neo-nazis, have used our flag in disgrace. If you are from the South, Confederate heritage is part of you. This is history. The ignorant have confused the Confederate battle flag with having something to do with racism. We as Southerners CAN NOT conform to the same thought. Confederacy is history and heritage period. It means nothing else. The bad thing is that most people using our flag in the wrong way are not even from the South.

We all know what would happen if it had been a Mexican flag or any symbol from any other culture, especially any anti-American group. Everyone has all the rights that our laws and our constitution allow; with the exception of Christians, southerners, white people, consevatives (even black conservatives) and males. Where is the ACLU? Just wondering.

This man has made a personal statement. That is his right. Have all of the Mexico flags been removed from school property. Do you recognize other cultures. I am sure you do. Grow up and act like you are Americans. At least this comes from American History.
