BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Forecasters say a storm system could bring high wind and isolated tornadoes to northern Alabama this weekend. The National Weather Service issued advisories today saying much of the state could receive winds of up to 35 mph through tomorrow afternoon.
GAYLESVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- State troopers say a police officer and a young child were among three people killed in an east-Alabama wreck. Officials say 24-year-old Charity Sloane Brewster was driving with a 2-year-old passenger when she lost control and hit a car driven by 51-year-old Centre Police Officer Jeffrey Hugh Bryant of Piedmont. The crash killed the officer, the woman and the child.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Authorities say one person is dead and two more are injured after a birthday party turned violent near Birmingham. Police were called to a party early this morning to find a man dead in the parking lot outside. Two more people were stabbed and were hospitalized.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) -- Astronauts removed an old space station pump today, sailing through the first of a series of urgent repair spacewalks to revive a crippled cooling line. Astronauts successfully removed an ammonia pump with a bad valve although that task was planned for the next spacewalk on Monday.
BIG PINE KEY, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating the deaths of 10 brown pelicans found with their pouches slashed in the Florida Keys. Florida Keys Wildlife Refuge officials say slashes to the birds' pouches leave them unable to hunt and swallow. The birds are slowly starving to death.
PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) -- A Louisiana man died after a 12-foot boat capsized near Pensacola. The Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission say Brent Wilson of Pensacola and Brent Keller of Metairie, La., floated for hours after waves inundated their boat on Thursday. Wildlife Commission Lt. Doug Berryman says Keller removed his life jacket and eventually sank.

HARLEM, Ga. (AP) -- The east Georgia town of Harlem is offering refunds on more than 85 speeding tickets because of a technical glitch. The Augusta Chronicle reports city officials learned police officers were basing traffic tickets on radar equipment that hadn't been certified properly by the state.
VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) -- A federal prosecutor is seeking more surveillance videos from a gymnasium where south Georgia teen Kendrick Johnson was found dead inside a rolled-up exercise mat. The Valdosta Daily Times reports U.S. Attorney Michael Moore issued a subpoena for hard drives containing original surveillance videos of the old gym at Lowndes High School in Valdosta. Johnson's family disputes investigators saying the teen was trapped upside down before he died in January.
SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) -- A Chatham County sheriff's officer has accused of child molestation has been arrested. Authorities say the officer, who has been with the department since 2007, was arrested yesterday after his house was searched. Additional details on the case weren't immediately available.
