Pet Cockatoo Sounds Fire Alarm, Helps Wake Family

LILBURN, Ga. (AP) - As smoke began seeping through a family's
Gwinnett County home, their pet cockatoo bird sounded the alert.

Relatives say the cockatoo began squawking over and over, "Incoming! incoming!" when smoke began coming from the utility
room early Monday morning.

Linda George says the family's pet bird likes to watch TV and picks up words from shows.

George says she thinks the bird was trying to get the family's attention by screaming "Incoming! incoming!"

George is the grandmother of 13-year-old Grace George, who was getting ready for school in the home. Authorities say the teenager
also began alerting family members to the blaze and helped rescue
other pets.

Gwinnett fire Capt. Jeff Johnson said the fire could have been deadly if the smoke reached family members in their sleep.
