WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is throwing the door open even further to a compromise with congressional Republicans on tax cuts.
Obama told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid today he'd consider permitting a renewal of Bush era tax cuts for all taxpayers, including the wealthy.
But Obama told the Democratic leaders he would expect that Republicans, as part of the bargain, would include commitments to some Democratic priorities.
The fresh talk of accommodation came just hours after Senate Republicans thwarted an attempt by their Democratic colleagues to push through a bill that would have denied continuing tax cuts for the wealthy while permitting them for other taxpayers.
Reid said he hoped for an agreement by the middle or end of next week on legislation that would combine an extension of tax cuts with a renewal of expiring jobless benefits.
