NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (AP) -- A Tampa Bay area man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for hurting his son so badly that the boy is in a permanent vegetative state.
A Pasco County judge sentenced 28-year-old Jonathan Gelb on Friday.
A jury convicted him last month of aggravated child abuse.
The Tampa Bay Times reports that Gelb's son Lukuz, who is nearly 4, cannot see, walk, talk or feed himself. The boy wears a helmet to protect his head, and his family says he could die any day.
Authorities say Gelb was watching Lukuz in September 2008 when he began twitching and later gasping for air. Doctors said the child's brain was bleeding, and he had leg fractures.
Experts testified the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
