Man Charged With Negligence in Daughter's Shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A Jacksonville man whose daughter
accidentally shot and wounded herself has been charged with culpable negligence.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reports that 32-year-old Donnell Bernard Burney was charged Monday, accused of improperly storing the handgun that discharged and wounded the 6-year-old girl.

According to a report, Burney told officers he had been cleaning the gun in his kitchen Jan. 16 and left it on a counter while he went into another room.

Burney said he heard a loud pop from another room and ran back to the kitchen to find his bleeding daughter.

Authorities say Burney hid the gun outside, under his house before taking his daughter to a nearby hospital for treatment.
