Bad news for consumers and nail salons in California.
A report by environmental and health organizations in the state shows that several nail polishes claiming to be free of toxic chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects and fertility problems may contain the hazardous ingredients anyway.
The study took a small sample of 25 nail polishes distributed to the San Francisco Bay area salons.
Findings show products claiming to be free of the "toxic trio" of chemicals were actually more likely to contain those ingredients than products that didn't make such claims.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the city plans to launch a program this summer to encourage its nail salons to adopt safer practices for customers and employees.
