ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (AP) -- A Georgia Air Force base is awarding a $3.7 billion contract to the Boeing Company to handle upgrades of dozens of fighter jets owned by Saudi Arabia.
Officials at Robins Air Force Base say the contract is part of a $29 billion deal in which the U.S. is selling 84 new F-15 fighters to the Saudi air force while it upgrades dozens of older planes.
The contract calls for Boeing to develop conversion kits to upgrade 70 of the Saudi jets, test and evaluate the finished work and familiarize pilots with the changes.
The middle Georgia base was assigned to oversee the upgrades and maintenance of the Saudi fighter jets after the White House announced the deal in December.
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Former Georgia football coach Jim Donnan has agreed to a proposed bankruptcy settlement with a West Virginia company and investors who say the coach owes them $40 million lost in a failed Ponzi scheme.
Court records show a federal bankruptcy judge in Ohio approved the settlement Wednesday. Donnan filed for bankruptcy protection last July in Georgia. A judge there must also approve it. A hearing is scheduled July 19.
Retail liquidation company GLC Limited says payouts to investors in a Ponzi scheme drove it into bankruptcy. Donnan was an early investor in GLC and recruited others to invest, but he denies being part of a scheme.
The settlement calls for Donnan to pay more than $7 million to GLC, plus 80 percent of claims by investors he recruited.
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- A Georgia man says he stopped an attack on a young woman near downtown Athens when he jumped from his truck brandishing a pistol.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports 61-year-old Dennis Terry was heading to the post office when he saw a man and woman struggling over a bag. He intervened when he saw the man punch the woman and knock her to the ground.
Terry says he grabbed his pistol and ran toward the attacker, who fled on foot. More than five hours later Thursday, police arrested 57-year-old Samuel Tyrone Evans on charges including battery and possession of a gun by a convicted felon. It was unknown Saturday if Evans had an attorney.
Police say the woman was treated for scrapes and bruises.
