Experts: BP Ignored Warning Signs on Doomed Well

WASHINGTON (AP) - A group of technical experts says BP and its contractors missed and ignored a series of warning signs prior to the blowout that caused the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

In a 28-page report released late Tuesday, an independent panel convened by the National Academy of Engineering says the companies'
failure to learn from "near misses" showed there was "insufficient consideration of risk" aboard the drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

The panel's interim findings echo much of what has been discovered in prior investigations.

The panel says it may not be possible to establish what happened in the April 20 explosion because much of the evidence was lost when 11 workers died and the rig sank.

A final report is due in June.
