ELBERTA, Ala. (AP) -- Police in Elberta are seeking the driver of a car that led officers on a back-roads chase at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

WKRG-TV reports that police say Marcus Heaton ran through a police safety roadblock and then fled for 14 miles as officers pursued him.

Police Chief Stanley DeVane says the chase ended when Heaton's car crashed and the suspect ran into the woods and got away.

Police identified him after arresting two passengers they found with the wrecked car.

Police say they suspect Heaton fled the checkpoint Friday because he was transporting a drug commonly used to make crystal methamphetamine. He faces charged of reckless endangerment and eluding police.
