Antibiotic-free meat, that's what's for dinner, or at least that's what's on America's shopping list.
That's according to a new study by the Consumers Union, the group that publishes Consumer Reports magazine.
In the group's research 86-percent of consumers said they wanted meat raised without antibiotics in their local supermarket and 60-percent said they'd pay more for it.
The same group used secret shoppers to check out meat counters at stores in 23 states and found some chains offer no drug-free choices.
Farmers started using antibiotics in livestock back in the 1950s because they found the animals grew bigger, faster with less feed.
Public health officials say the drugs may be contributing to the rise in antibiotic-resistant infections in humans.
