An outdated kitchen can be a sore thumb in an otherwise beautiful home. Unfortunately, large-scale kitchen remodeling projects are also some of the most expensive.

In this Angie’s List report, five simple kitchen upgrades.

The kitchen seems to be the heart of the home, but to completely renovate it, the price tag could make you feel like you're having a heart attack. Why don’t you start small?

"Doing things like replacing the sink and the faucet, depending on the type/materials you use, you can do that for $150, or alternatively, replacing your countertops for around $500. If you reface your cabinets, you can have a whole new look,” Angie’s List Founder Angie Hicks said.

All of Angie’s suggestions make up five simple kitchen updates. Where will you see the biggest difference? Your cabinets. Instead of replacing, why not try a different color?

"This was a honey oak kitchen cabinet. The customer wanted to update it. So, what we have done is taken it from a honey oak and went to a white. It's still giving them the quality of the wood cabinets that they have had, but changing the color from a honey oak to a white, which makes it look a lot more modern,” contractor Kevin Jones said.

A lot more modern and a lot cheaper. That color change runs about $3,000 compared to a complete replacement at about $10,000.

Another simple update includes your counter tops. Depending on the material you use for new ones and the size of your kitchen, you're looking at only five hundred bucks.

A third option?

"A trick at making your kitchen appear larger is lighting. Swapping out fixture lighting for recessed or track lighting can help you highlight particular features in the kitchen. Adding lighting underneath your cabinets can make dark areas lighter and appear larger,” Hicks said.

Coming in at four and five, updating your faucets and adding a garbage disposal or trash compactor. These options are relatively inexpensive and can go a long way in making a kitchen more modern and practical.

Angie said a kitchen remodeling project can bring you up to an 85 percent return on your investment.
