Agriculture Secretary Asks for Help for Farmers

What started as a serious problem a few months ago is now a nightmare for the agriculture industry.

More than half the country is dealing with moderate or extreme drought conditions, and no one will feel the impact more than farmers.

Wednesday, agriculture secretary Tom Vilsak asked for help.

"The most important thing is for Congress to take some kind of action to provide some direction and assistance, so folks know what's going to happen and what protection they're going to have."

In the meantime, those with something still salvageable need a little help from above. Many have already surrendered and are plowing their fields.

Many will rely on insurance and government assistance to hold them over until next year.

all the poor farmers.all i ever here is poor farmers.they dont have to grow anything, just make a little effort and the government bails them out.what about the commercial fisherman,we dont get any bailouts if things dont go our way and all the fertilizers the farmers use end up in the gulf creating deadzone areas that takes away what once were produtive areas.why dont we get compensated for that.

Troy, I do agree with that some what. It would seem that fisherman would get some sort of compensation for fishing grounds being destroyed, but look how big the ocean is, fish some where eles. Farmers grow most of the worlds food. Fishing, well I really don't eat fish. I comsume a lot of vegetables tho. It's going to get worse than this, if you are a reading person read the Bible--- you'll read how things are going to get.
