The Smithsonian Museum and Research Complex in Washington is helping scientists learn about all the creatures that lived in the Gulf of Mexico before the oil started gushing.
The museum holds the most complete set of invertebrate species that live in the gulf, from commercial shrimp to the rarely seen giant squid and micro-organisms.
That collection will serve as the baseline for measuring the oil's unseen impact on the ecosystem and the extent of the gulf's recovery.
