TEXAS CITY, Texas (AP) - Every Gulf Coast state has now been touched by oil from the Deepwater Horizon well with the discovery of tar balls in eastern Texas.
The Coast Guard says about five gallons were scooped up Saturday on the Bolivar Peninsula, northeast of Galveston, some of them as big as ping pong balls. They've been confirmed to be from the runaway well. Another two gallons of tar balls were retrieved Sunday, but testing on them isn't complete yet.
The Coast Guard says it's possible the oil didn't float to Texas, but hitched a ride on a ship that was in the spill area.
Meanwhile, most of the offshore skimming operations in the Gulf were halted by choppy seas and high winds. A tropical system off Louisiana flared up, bringing heavy rain and winds.
