Abby Sunderland, 16, was on her way to being rescued in the middle of the Indian Ocean early Friday after being feared lost at sea during her attempted solo voyage around the world.
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) - A family spokesman says searchers have contacted a 16-year-old Southern California girl who was feared lost at sea in stormy weather in the southern Indian Ocean.
Abby Sunderland is said to be alive and well.
William Bennett with "Team Abby" said searchers aboard an airplane spotted her boat in an upright position and made contact with her via radio. Bennett said Sunderland said she was doing fine and had plenty of food.
He says a fishing vessel is en route to pick her up.
