Obama to Ask for Education Money

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is expected to call for an extra $1.35 billion in education grants when he visits an
elementary school Tuesday outside Washington.

The money would be in addition to $4.3 billion in competitive
set aside in the economic stimulus program. The first of those
awards, known as "Race to the Top," will be handed out in coming
months.

Senior administration officials say Obama wants the new money,
which must be approved by Congress, to also be awarded competitively.
