It's National Fire Prevention week, and Jackson County fire agencies are educating hundreds of elementary school students on how to prepare for one.
This year's campaign focuses on smoke alarms. Experts say people often forget to change batteries, and recommend doing so twice a year, as well as testing them monthly.
The National Fire Prevention Agency estimates there were approximately 1.3 million fires last year that killed more than 3,000 people.
The event concludes this Saturday with Marianna's Fire Safety Funday.
