The Anna Nicole Smith drug conspiracy trial kicked off Wednesday in Los Angeles.
Smith's lawyer-companion and two doctors are accused of illegally providing the Playboy playmate with controlled substances before her death from an accidental overdose in 2007.
Smith's lawyer-companion, Howard K. Stern, faces 11 felony counts including supplying drugs to an addict, providing drugs that were prescribed under his name and conspiracy to commit a crime. The two doctors face six felony counts including unlawfully prescribing a controlled substance.
The judge overseeing the case has informed the jury that the defendants are not on trial for causing Smith's death.
