There was a variety of announcements involving Nintendo video games on Tuesday involving several iconic video game franchises during a “Nintendo Direct” video streamed online.
The latest sequel to the popular Nintendo fighting franchise, Super Smash Brothers, isn’t planned for release until 2014, but it was announced Tuesday that Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog would return for the fourth game in the franchise. Sonic was first a playable character in Super Smash Brothers Brawl for the Nintendo Wii. This game, for the Nintendo WiiU and Nintendo 3DS, will feature Sonic alongside franchise staples like Mario and Pikachu along with newcomers such as Mega Man and Wii Fit Trainer.
A new game in the popular Kirby franchise was announced for the handheld, 3DS. The title, planned for a 2014 release, does not have an official name at this time.
The fourth game in the top-selling Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Franchise was announced to have online multiplayer for certain sports such as Speed Skating. It will also come bundled with a Wii Motion Plus game controller upon its release for the Nintendo WiiU on November 15th.
Finally, new footage of the upcoming WiiU Mario platformer, Super Mario 3D World, was shown. Along with the previously-shown Cat Mario powerup that will be new to the game, a new power-up that can duplicate your character was seen for the first time. 3D World will allow up to four players to control Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad through a variety of 3D worlds. It will be released on November 22nd.
