The flare is a common way for boats and ships in distress to signal for help.
Martha Coston's late husband had done some preliminary work on signaling devices for ships at night, but nothing beyond some notes and papers.
Martha, through ten years of hard work, came up with the flare. She founded the Coston Manufacturing Company to build the flares.
Eventually, the US Navy adopted them along with many companies throughout Europe.
