They’re a staple of movies, TV shows and other entertainment. They were the scourge of the high seas. They’re pirates, me mateys, and today’s the day to talk like ‘em!
According to the official website for International Talk Like a Pirate Day, the unofficial holiday started when two friends were playing racquetball and talking like pirates. They decided it should be a national holiday to talk like one and they decided on September 19th.
One of News 4’s Viewers, Kenneth from Enterprise, sent in a video talking like a pirate! You can see it in the video above.
Some businesses are also recognizing the unofficial holiday. At Krispy Kreme doughnuts, talking like a pirate can score you a free doughnut today only. However, if you dress up like a pirate, you can get a free dozen. To get that free dozen, according to their website, you will need three or more of the following: pirate hat, bandana, eye patch, costume hook, pirate shirt, parrot, peg leg or knickers.
