Unofficial Holiday of October 16th: Dictionary Day

It's an indispensable reference in writing, reading and research and its American invention is celebrated on this unofficial holiday.

American Noah Webster was born on October 16th, 1758. He would go on to begin work on the dictionary in the English language in the early 1800s and eventually finish it after twenty-seven years and published it in 1828. Webster's is still one of the most common dictionaries in America, updated frequently with the addition of new words and the deletion of obsolete ones.

A dictionary, like Webster's, has an alphabetical list of words, their pronunciations and definitions. A dictionary can come in a compact “pocket” form or a more comprehensive “complete” form. Other major dictionaries include the Oxford English Dictionary.
