The return of Star Wars to the big screen was accompanied by a big push in toys, books, and video games.
On May 19th, 1999, the video game Star Wars Episode I Racer was released for the Nintendo 64 video game console.
The game was based on one of the most-recognizable scenes from The Phantom Menace film, the pod race.
The film offered a tournament mode which let players race through a variety of settings across many planets, while improving their pod. Players could also unlock new racers and tracks in this mode. The game also offered a free race mode, time attack mode and two-player multiplayer.
The release was a success, and was later also released for the Sega Dreamcast and PC and Macintosh computers. A sequel was later released on Playstation 2, as well as a Sega-made arcade game.
