Tuesday marked the anniversary of the first ever Mario role-playing game and today in history, the beloved plumber made a long-anticipated return to classic form.
Nintendo's iconic Mario character became most popular for his side-scrolling adventures, starting with Super Mario Brothers for the original Nintendo.
Until the launch of New Super Mario Bros., it had been 14 years since a new game like that one was made.
On May 15th, 2006, New Super Mario brothers was released for the Nintendo DS handheld.
It combined the classic gameplay of old with 3D graphics, along with new items like the mega mushroom. This allowed Mario to grow to a giant size and smash through items and enemies.
New Super Mario Brothers was a hit and inspired sequels on the DS, 3DS, Wii and WiiU, each one with new levels and power-ups.
