Following the successful footsteps of the first two boxing-themed movies starring Sylvester Stallone, Rocky III would score a knockout for audiences on this day in history.
As a statue is revealed of famed boxer Rocky Balboa in Philadelphia, an up-and-coming boxer named Clubber Lang (played by Mr. T) challenges Rocky.
The film also features Terry Bollea as Thunderlips, Bollea would be later become the extremely popular professional wrestler Hulk Hogan.
Rocky III also featured the iconic theme song “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, which would become a hit song and even be nominated for an Academy Award for best original song.
The film made over $270 million on a $17 million budget, and would be followed up by even more sequels.
