This Day in Movie History – July 28, 1951 – Disney's Alice in Wonderland Released

Disney's 13th animated feature film was released on this day in history.

The Lewis Carroll novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has been adapted into films numerous times, and for over a decade, Walt Disney expressed interest in bringing the unique tale to the world of feature animation.

With some changes to enhance the comedic aspects, Disney's Alice in Wonderland was released on July 28, 1951.

Initially, the film was not very successful. It had mixed reviews from critics, and was not a big hit at the box office. The film was never re-released in theaters during the remainder of Walt Disney's lifetime, but became popular again in the 1970s and has been a part of the Disney home video collection ever since.

Disney's Alice character is a staple of Disney theme parks, and even played a major role in the Disney Kingdom Hearts video games.
