This Day in History: June 2nd, 2003 – Mars Express Probe Launched

A successful orbiter and a failed lander for the planet Mars was launched on this day in history.

Mars Express was a mission by the European Space Agency for the planet Mars. It was launched by a Russian Soyuz rocket on June 2nd, 2003.

Mars Express consisted of an orbiter and a lander. The lander, Beagle 2, failed to safely land on the surface after Mars Express arrived at the planet on Christmas Day 2003.

However, the orbiter, on the other hand, has been and continues to be a great success for ESA to this day. It has returned numerous pictures and other scientific data of not only Mars, but its moons, for over ten years.
