By: CBS

On October 11, 1984, space shuttle "Challenger" astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan became the first American woman to walk in space.

The occasion was part of an eight day mission aboard the shuttle with the purpose of studying the earth's land formations, ocean and weather patterns.

She and David C. Leestma ventured outside the shuttle to conduct tests on refueling techniques. The results of their 3 1/2 hour study are useful today in refueling orbiting satellites after the original supply of thrusting fuel has been depleted.

The 7 person crew aboard the craft included sally ride. It was her second journey into space.
